If only Timo played S!



Ok so I know he does sometimes, but the damage calculations are
different, making weapon comparison more difficult. I want to keep only
one of the polearms - Osondir, Theoden and the Scythe of Slicing of
Frost. Stats are as follows:

Osondir: 5 attacks, 3d5, +159% damage, fire brand (+14), slay undead
and giants (+18)
Theoden: 6 attacks, 2d6, +154% damage, slay dragons (+18)
SoSoF: 5 attacks, 7d3, +178% damage, frost brand (+14)

None of the other attributes really matter (eg. the ESP on Theoden or
the SI on Osondir), because I swap weapons a lot. My reckoning is this
(apologies if this looks awful, I'm working in a proportional font):

This seems to indicate that the SoSoF is by far the more dangerous
weapon, but have I overlooked anything? It has the smallest dice, so it
gets least benefit from critical hits. If we assume one extra die per
hit (averaging out the extra dice from criticals), the SoS still comes
out 25% ahead on normal damage and only just behind against dragons,
undead and non-fire-resistant creatures.

Things are going well now. I bothered to clear out a pit and was
rewarded with Theoden, Luthien, Rohirrim and Primal Forces, as well as
my first rod of probing and staff of holiness. I've junked the former -
should I keep the latter? It seems to just give prot from evil and
boldness - does it do anything else?

The pit was really really weird - two sets of hounds, a few wraiths, a
few demons, a few animals, quite a few dragons, sundry giants and
trolls, a couple of molds and quylthulgs and my first druj. Couldn't
see a theme there anywhere. Did get my first great wyrm (storm), first
master mystic and my first balrog though. Killed everything except the
druj, which was at +20 speed and summoned undead 1in1 - no thanks. Also
met an undead mystic - killed it twice but it kept getting back up - do
these ever die or are you just supposed to send them away? I tried
killing it with both fire and acid and neither finished it off. Do you
just have to kill them a certain number of times?

Leon - I found a bug with Sting, btw. I enchanted it up to (+8,+8) but
it went back to (+7,+8) as soon as I re-equipped it after taking it
off. I have enchanted other artifacts successfully (eg. the Mace of
Rhonas started at (+15,+8)) so I suspect this is related to the
set-completion code.

The scoring algorithm seems to have improved since early-teen betas -
