I'd just like to add to Neil's post that another common tactic for sorcerors is to use a lot of +CON and +HP equipment. All my ToME sorcs, for example use armor that is (-X,-Y) (+40% HP) or whatever. It shows up quite commonly in rand art armor; and, as a sorc, you don't care about the (-X,-Y).
