Detect, detect, detect.
Get armor that boosts your HP.
Detect, detect, detect.
Spellbinder to escape/heal/whatever when at 50% HP.
Detect, detect, detect.
There's a town quest that gives hit points.
And the biggest keys for me are to detect the troublesome monsters
before you have to fight them*, control LoS so you get a jump on them**,
and be faster than they are to finish them before they can finish you***.

Spectres are a subrace in ToME that do that, instead of a full race as
in Zangband.
