Considering that it is 21st century and that GTK+ ports of modern
variants aren't crippled anymore, I agree with your decision. I like
the idea of Xt-based toolkits (each and every single widget can be tuned
with widgets), but actually using Xaw applications is a pain.
<offtopic rant> Actually, this Linux/Un*x motto "you can adjust
everything if you look in the right place" is getting very tiresome at
times.
A few days ago, I've got a new LaserJet 1022 printer (my parents'
present for coming of age :). Getting a printer to work in Linux...
need I say more? Oh, the actual installation was piece of cake --
kernel autodetected everything and loaded usblp module, I downloaded and
compiled a new version of HP's hpijs driver, then configured the printer
in CUPS. The real problem is actually printing anything useful on it.
Because Russian language happens to use those funny Cyrillic letters,
which come out printed as blanks.
Now, fonts for printing need to be configured separately in a2ps, TeX,
Firefox/Thunderbird, OpenOffice.org and KDE. For KDE, everything worked
fine out of the box. For TeX, everything worked too -- I went through
the pains of installing good Cyrillic PostScript fonts for it before.
For Firefox, I found an instruction on setting it up to use TrueType
fonts for printing (through editing undocumented config files, of course)
and followed it. Nothing happened. Alternatively, the instruction
recommended installing Xprint -- a separate X server for printing.
I did that and indeed got Cyrillic letters, but they were overlapping on
each other and nearly unreadable. For now, I decided to use Konqueror
and KMail for printing.
As for OpenOffice.org, it doesn't print in Russian either, and I have
absolutely no idea how to fix it. There are no appropriate settings, no
config files -- nothing. I'm using a special Russian version of that
bloated OpenOffice crap (by ALT Linux), and even it cannot print in
Russian! Sure, WYSIWYG sucks etc., but what if I just want to
print labels for my cassettes, without re-reading LaTeX manual?
And as for a2ps, it looks like I just have to copy PostScript fonts from
LaTeX directory. But right now, I'm more inclined to print from KWrite.
Sometimes I just hate Linux. The problem is, I hate Windows even
more...
