[V306] How do you start diving?

Long time reader, first time poster.

I'm trying to crack vanilla, yet my initial approach (slow and steady) doesn't
work well - it takes lots of time and I get overconfident, which is deadlier
here than in ToME (which I played excessively in last two years with some
success).

So I decided to mimic Eddie Grove and dive quickly. Or rather, die quickly, as
I'm a bit clueless what to do at the start of the game to increase my survival
chances above 0% and not turn into "slow & steady".

My race/class combo of choice is Dwarven Priest.

Any advice?
