I'm wondering what the stance from experienced ADOMers is towards ADOM
victories patched with Togu's patch.
I'm using ADOM-Sage because it averts random crashes that I used to
experience with the windows version (is there a way to initiate combat
with non-hostiles, or do I have to kick them?), and furthermore Togu's
patch.
The uberjackel "bug" is in my opinion ridiculous. I'm curious though,
as to what effect the patch has on this. Because in the late game I
can be wielding TOTRR and have a strength above 60, and still take more
than one hit to slay monsters that I was fighting at the beginning of
the game! It defeats the purpose of gaining power if everything else
adjusts in power proportionally. If you keep on playing, then
eventually everything gets too tough. This is unrealistic and silly,
and makes you feel like your efforts in gaining power have been
nullified. Rats with HP in the hundreds is sick - period. I'm
wondering how this can possibly be intentional, and whether it was like
this in the earlier versions of ADOM (and what relation, if any, this
has to the uberjackel bug).
I'm wondering just what detriment it will bring to my enjoyment of the
game if I remove Togu's patch. I want my victories to be authentic. I
understand that the patch has the potential to alter game balance in a
big way, and thus, it cannot be a proper victory. It also patches an
artifact into the game that the author may have deliberately removed.
I want to play the game as the author originally intended - but those
intentions are rather dubious in some places! What do you think?
I wish the author would release a "corrected" official version of ADOM
without any new features, just to get these issues out of the way.
I personally have never had a problem with uberjackals or anything. Sure, maybe spiders get a bit tough in the end-game, and Chaos Warriors can be downright brutal, but by that point in the game, you should have alternate methods of dealing with them than just brute force. With all of the tactics and spells and abilities available in ADOM, I don't really see the uberjackal bug as a big factor in why a character wins or loses a game. I've had something like 5 or 6 winners, I think all on v1.1.1, and haven't really noticed the impact of any uberjackal bug... however, that doesn't mean that I'm blindly killing off hundreds of jackals and spiders; I'm usually aware of how much stronger enemies can get over the course of the game. Long story short, this "bug" doesn't really have much of an impact on my game.
Also, with Togu's patch, it unlocks certain (all?) artifacts to be dropped randomly (if I understood discussions about the patch correctly; I haven't actually downloaded it myself)... which I do see as affecting how the game was supposed to be played (certain races get certain artifacts, and that's the way it goes).
I guess I would view a patched victory as a little less "pure" or whatever than a normal victory, but it's not like anyone here is going to get pissed off about it.
