Carol could be right on the money- bypass the varistor inside the power
filter box. Just jump it to see if the problem goes away.
I read you are familiar with Clays(marvin) site. You've replaced C2 in the
cabinet? Checked for AC flutter?
In my experience transformers generally work or dont- so IMHO its not the
transformer but either a dried out cap or bad connections. You may have
already fixed it

Hello,
I recently acquired a Black Hole machine. I've been trying to track
down an elusive problem. I'm an electrical engineer with lots of
circuit board experience and industrial controls experience, so I'm
usually able to track down pinball problems fairly quickly. I've been
working on this problem on and off for about 3 months!
Maybe I can give a few possibilities to think about,
Coil shorting to an assembly, when activated causing a short?
Power Supply cap?
The jolt from the coils causing an edge connector pin to not make
contact?
I think its a coil shorting or a broken or unsoldered diode at one of
the coils.

Possibly a broken varistor.

Tony and Carrol,
Thanks for the comments. I do not recall seeing any varistor in Black
Hole and the documentation at Marvin's website says Gottlieb did not
use them.
I was suspecting a component shorting to the frame as well, or a
connector issue or bad coil diode as you mentioned, but I've been
through the game several times and not found it yet. So far the game
is working today since I re-soldered the transformer wires. I'll keep
looking for the issues you suggested if the problem returns.
