I've got a Gottlieb Genesis System 80B pinball machine I picked up non-
working a few months ago. It was complete and everything looked to be
in good shape, minus the right ramp which has a few cracks in it. The
board had the original battery removed and a cordless phone type
battery in it's place but there was battery damage on the board and
this was never taken care of. The machine would not boot at all. I
ended up sending the CPU board out to Jerry Clause who was able to
turn it around pretty quickly. During that time I had also installed
a new 500 ohm pot on the power supply and installed a new 6 pin male
header for the +5vdc connections on the power supply. I'm gonna
replace the pins in the molex connectors but I don't have any pins
right now to do that. The originals don't look to be in bad shape
(ie: no corrosion, etc).

So when I got the board back, I hooked up the CPU board to the power
supply and had everything else disconnected. I had a good +5.10vdc on
the CPU as measured from C1 and the reset pin on the CPU was showing
around 4.4vdc so that all looked good (the reset board was connected
to the CPU also). So then I hooked up the display connector and fired
it up again but got nothing on the screen. FYI, Jerry did the slam
tilt mod on this board. From what I've read on Clay's guide I should
be seeing something on the display. I do know the display works
because at various times of having boards connected/disconnected, I
would get garage on the screen or sometimes just a single horizontal
line from left to right. I've checked the voltages on the display
connector and they are all good. I've been thru Clay's excellent
System 80 guides and tried the power up procedures but I'm not getting
very far.

Jerry told me to just try plugging everything in and fire it up and
see what happens. So I tried that and immediately it goes thru what I
would think would be the unveil of the monster in the middle of the
playfield and then shortly after the 8amp solenoid fuse blows. I've
uploaded a video of this to YouTube which can be seen here:

My sound board is getting +5vdc but not +12 (reading around +4) and
-12 (reading around -6) so I'll have to look at the sound board power
supply.

My next step is to pull out the driver board and check the
transistors. I'm also gonna check the ground connections on the
transformer in the bottom of the cab. I've been told that the ground
mods are not as important on the later System 80B games as some of the
earlier ones like Haunted House, Black Hole, etc. Thoughts on this?

Anyone have any suggestions on where to go from here? Thanks.

Rodney

Hi Rodney,

just a few thoughts...

First, please disconnect the reset board. It is not needed for a home use
game, which is what I am presuming. They cause more trouble than they are
worth. If after you get the game functioning 100%, and you rebuild that
reset board with new caps, etc. then try plugging the reset board back in...

As for the solenoid fuse blowing, certainly you will want to check any
solenoids associated with the 'monster' apparatus. I am not familiar with
this game (unfortunately), so I can't be more specific. Another possibility
may be a bad solenoid voltage bridge rectifier.

You may want to check the display filament fuse(s).

Yup, your power to the sound board needs to be investigated.

It is always a good idea to assess all the transistors on the driver board.

Many people advocate a ground fix for the grounds on the power supply
module. www.flippers.com outlines this. Of note, I have performed this
particular ground mod to both of my 80B games, resulting in no improvement
of the problems I was having at the time. The problems eventually were
found to be unrelated to ground issues. So, I do have mixed feelings about
this particular mod. I am in the minority however about this, so take this
with a grain of salt.

Good luck, and please report back your findings.

Regards,
Dan
