My brother in law was with the Marines, stationed in an office at the
Pentagon during the attacks. His office was getting remodeled, so on
9/11 he was in a temporary office further down the wing. Just before
the plane hit the building he got a phone call from a buddy in the
Marines in California, he picked it up and his buddy said that we were
under attack, as the plane (or planes by that time) just recently hit
the WTC. My brother in law asked his frantic friend to calm down, and
right during that phone call the plane hit the Pentagon and the
building shook violently as my brother in law got thrown out of his
chair backwards onto the floor, and the suspended ceiling and all it's
tiles and lights dropped on him. He said the room he was in was
filled with smoke and dust, and he was stunned for a while as he
crawled out from under all the mess that fell on him and made his way
out.
He never called my sister or any of us for more than 12 hours as he
and fellow Marines tried to pull any one they could from the
wreckage. We all thought he was dead after not hearing from him for
so long. He told us that he saw some bad stuff pulling people out of
the rubble. He told us of crawling through the debris, and seeing a
guy in the rubble with an outstretched arm. Not knowing if the guy
was alive or dead, he reached for this guy's hand, trying to free him,
only to have the arm break off the dead body. Horrible stuff. I feel
for everyone who was impacted by these events.
Luckily my brother in law lived through it. If he was in his original
office he'd be dead. Psychologically I'm sure he'll never be the same
after that, nor will most of us.
