The cartridge on this site looks a lot like the one in the auction.
It talks about some of the things they were used for.

Actually, they did design a separate motor drive for the film.
The 8-track part is completely separate from the film part,
and as I posed earlier, the projector doesn't contain any
of the hardware needed to drive the capstan or read the tape.
But even if there were audio capabilities, the film mechanism
can be operated independently from the tape. Maybe they intended
for a future game to have background music or something, although
that would have been impossible with the hardware they currently
had.

The cart is an 8-track audio tape cartridge with a second cart

There is some of the mech needed to drive the 8-track in the
projector, but the cart has no tape and the projector has no
capstan motor or tape head. Still, it looks like the design
was meant for simultaneous slide shows with audio.

I don't think there was meant to be any audio at all. The eight track
tape design was probably a cheap method for them to drive the film
reel without having to design an entirely new motor drive mechanism or
method. They could simply use the guts of an off the shelf eight
track player or even an eight track that was already suited for arcade
use.

Plus it the eight track was playing any audio the pictures would be
constantly changing as the audio played.
