Re: PAPA suggestions

Just for the record, I wrote and know inside and out the MPC rules
which are based heavily on the PAPA rules. The only similar situation
that we had was handled differently, probably mainly because we play
all A and B division games on the same machines. Even if I never
really get to compete in tournaments (maybe an upcoming GameWorks
one?), I find them fascinating and have found myself reading rules for
other tournaments quite a bit. I'm just curious because as much as I
wish I could make it out there, the truth of the situation is that it
would probably be at least five years until I could swing something
like that... so I have to live vicariously through others for now ;)

I think your confusion comes from the fact you think failed entries
have some kind of value...  at PAPA, they basically don't.  Failed
entries can affect other players' positions, but that doesn't mean
squat to the guy making the failed entry.  Once you participate once
you might understand.  Especially after watching a frantic Sat evening
as people on the bubble play 2 bad games of an entry, then void the
rest so they can quickly purchase another chance an try try again
before the bell tolls at 3am.   Hmm.. that might be a nice addition..
a big ol bell to bash on right at 3am Sun :)

I'm still a little confused, although less so... Just so I have this
right:

I start in C. I'm doing well, so well I decide that I want to move up
to B. I decide to void all of my C entries and purchase new B
entries.

I can play whatever game I want as many times as I want, but only the
top one counts (that is what you mean by "failed", right?), and only
my top score impacts others.

I think I have that part right. The part that I don't understand is
how this system stops people from sandbagging? I totally get why you
would want to make more money, but if you purchase C entries and do
super good without expecting it, what (if any?) encouragement do you
have to move up to B? It sounds like the only people who would want
to switch are those who did really badly on their first plays, and
want to try a different set of games?

And again, I'm not in any way trying to sound negative. I'm just
curious seeing as how PAPA is the best tournament (in my opinion) in
the world how things are handled so I can apply that learning to my
own tournament :)

Also, can any A players tell me how that DM worked? That blows my
mind. (I love the game, I'd love to know how I could use it in the
tourney one year :) )
