Truth is there is no good easy answer. Just pick your level of pain -
factor in how much the game is worth, if you will keep it or sell it,
and what you can live with.

Good call! I bought the machine for a few bucks, had in mind from the
start to use it as a learning tool. Price in parts alone would make up
for what I paid for it. This machine has it all, the mechanics were so
so, got it up and running. The cab has been repainted, so I will try
and bring that back, the playfield as we know, and the backglass is
pretty much wasted. All in all a learniong tool for future projects
that may be worth it. A true labor of love in this case.

I have had two Aztecs by now (in my quest for le perfect one), along
with a Williams Travel Time, all in Florida which means moisture-
logged garage-stored monstrosities.

I would say your paint thing is due to something similar (you live in
FL by chance?!?) and your entire playfield is compromised. These are
playfields where - were they to have mylar on them - you'd lose tons
of paint.

You will probably want to do what I did, which is just expect to
repaint major areas. I am doing it "Jumping Jack Restore Project"
style and using a roll of frisket with an airbrush. I picked up a
Badger 350 airbrush kit (can get them for like $35 online) along with
propellant can, hose, regulator and paints for this very project.
Maybe you and I can share tips! lol...

I am getting ready to repaint the wings of my "birdman" as well...if
you scan those numbers, I would be VERY interested to have those
scans, as some of my numbers are incomplete.

Also, I plan on testing a one-can solution product that has been
posted here ONCE before that I picked up, it's a spray can with a
"spraypaint" nozzle, and underneath it a glass jar screws in to feed
it your custom-mixed (and thinned) acrylic paint. This whole thing was
like $5 at my local fiberglass supply shop, with $3 propellant refills
(beats the $60+ I spent on the Badger plus supplies). Frisket is
online at like $13 for a 12 yard roll (that's the deal I got
recently). I am going to test both and see if the cheap solution is
"good enough for the application" - i.e. to-be-sealed playfield single-
color masked repaints.

Anyhow, if you're going to do those scans, please let me know!!

Thanks,
Matt

I'm up in New Jersey, I don't know the history of the machine. It was
complete, everything mechanical was there, just in really bad
condition. Very very dirty and a bunch of hack repairs. Now it seems
to work fine. Cosmetically it is a mess. If the playfield did not need
cleaning, it would be perfect, as soon as I tried cleaning it, bad
things started happening. The yellow area to the right of the pop
bumpers is going to come off, I have not touched it yet but you can
tell. FYI, I'm going to try and scan the bonus numbers with a flatbed
scanner upside down, then use photoshop to touch them up. The only
thing is i'm a photoshop virgin for the most part, so it may take a
little tweaking to get result we would be looking for. Send an e-mail
to me and i'll look you up when I'm done with the numbers.
