Jaz nailed it. After your done with your task, wipe the tip on the
spunge and apply some fresh solder to the tip. Also, if you have a
variable temperature iron, keep the temperture down to 550 F or so. I
use a Weller WTCPT with a couple different size tips. It has no
adjustments and the tips last a LONG time.

I agree with all that except the 550 f or so.  The longer you have to
hold the iron on the connection, the more risk of damage.  I solder
around 750 for most boards as you can move from pin to pin quickly
because the joint heats up faster.  I think it's better to have more
heat for less time than less heat for more time.

What temperature to use is always a question mark. Pretty much any
solder station manufacturer will advise to use the lowest temperature
possible for the job to minimize potential thermal damage. Of course
too low heat is no good. There's little need to ever go over 700
degrees, usually between 600-700 will be in the park. there's a big
difference in solder tip life staying below 700 degrees if possible.
On double sided bards 700 works, switches and coils 600 and the
plastic of the switch, coil, and wiring does not melt. Even if it
takes longer with the iron, much less damage.
