I also was able to triple thick the glass with no pooling afterwards
That, to me, is the bigger issue. Any cleaning product can be tested
in an inconspicuous area to see if it works or lifts the ink, but you
won't know whether it will cause Triple Thick to pool or not until
after you've cleaned the glass and by then it's too late to go back.
Personally, I've had good luck using Novus 2 to remove nicotine stains
without lifting backglass ink, but on *some* glasses I think it has
caused the Triple Thick to pool and not lay down evenly. Tim
Meighan's toothpaste idea sounds intriguing, and I may have to give it
a try sometime.
Yes the toothpaste trick sounds interesting. Like Novus 2, it does
have a very mild abrasive in it to clean your teeth. Basically, what
we're looking for here is a mild solvent (like water) and a mild
surfactant (one that works good on smoke, but doesn't affect paint).
People who say don't ever use any chemical on a backglass are too
extreme. Everything is a chemical, distilled water even (and air for
that matter). You just have to pick the right one. Novus 2 and
toothpaste both work I expect because they have a surfactant. Their
problem comes in that they also have an abrasive, so they need to be
applied with lots of solvent (water) and removed wet to not abrade the
paint. The paint may not like that much solvent (water).
I like the idea of Scrubbing bubbles or Crazy Clean, in that they have
a minimum of solvent (water) for a decent amount of surfactant. I'm
just trying to find one with the right properties that is inert to the
paint.

What I have done that I am about to post has worked for me w/no
issues...I DO NOT GUARANTEE IT WILL WORK FOR ANYBODY ELSE W/OUT DOING
ANY DAMAGE!!!(end disclaimer) Small test area is always best.
On EM bg's and 2 different translites, I have watered down Mean Green
and LIGHTLY dampened(sprayed) a cloth and gently wiped the bg/
translite area till clean. If you find yellowed(tar/nicotine) area's
that are being stubborn and not getting clean as other areas, best to
leave them alone. As soon as I had wiped w/damp cloth, I dry it off
right away. I have also dampened/misted a rag w/Windex and used the
same technique. On EM's, DO NOT get it on/near the white translucent
area around the score reel windows. This has always worked for me,
and I do realize there is always the unfortunate 'worked great till
this time', but hopefully that won't happen. Best of luck to you w/
what ever you decide to use/try.
