If Stern wants to keep going they are going to need a game of TAF like
popularity. And that means they need to cash in on something that is
hot, popular and now. Chances are, that will be something I hate, but
I'm not the market.
Most of the licensed games that have peformed well over the years
aren't "flash in the pan" type licenses....they're usually something
iconographic with wide demographic appeal. Sure Addam's was based on
the movie -but the characters themselves have been around forever...so
you had instant recognition from the older generation AND the younger
generation who just knew the movie. T2, Star Trek, hell even Elvira I
suppose had a somewhat relevant if not cultish icon status at the
time. South Park was a lucky gamble for Sega/Stern....its future
wasn't known at the time, but now has achieved icon status....I'm
surprised they haven't revisited the license as they did w/ Simpsons
(another icon license). Stern's been pretty smart w/ most of their
licenses - Pirates, Spidey, Batman, Simpsons, Family Guy,
Shrek...these are engrained in multiple generations of potential
players. Even WoF, if you think about it ...is part of our
culture...EVERYONE knows it. CSI and 24, while undoubtedly popular -
I don't think they exactly have the instant emotional attachment w/
people that some other licenses have. It's a shame Transformers
didn't work out ...perfect license.
Dollhouse? It'll be cancelled in a few weeks
Heroes? Even people still watching it hate the show now.
