I tested the new speaker with some test leads and it works.  It seems
to be a little bit quieter though.  It also doesn't sound like it's
really making that much of a difference.  I might just return this
one, and order a woofer.

Yes, that's a pretty low-end speaker, Kyle.

In Congo (WPC-95), you are looking for the most efficient, quality
speaker that you can find. This would be my first choice:

Reason is, decent low-frequency response combined with high
efficiency. The higher impedance (8 ohms) is also better suited to the
amplifier.

I know with my machines (both DCS [digitally compressed sound], Demo
Man and The Shadow) the sound from the speakers is only as good as the
sound sent to them. I actually hooked my Demo Man up to some high end
home audio speakers that I made and the improvement in sound was
negligible.  With the subwoofer that you are working on, a lot depends
on which frequencies are being sent to the woofer and I suspect that
this may vary from game to game.  Your Congo machine is also a DCS
which uses 4 ohm speakers (an 8 ohm speaker will work as well but the
sensitivity will go down relative to a 4 ohm speaker because the 8 ohm
speaker will draw less current from the same audio signal).

The only downside to choosing a driver that has a very high
sensitivity is that those drivers typically have higher resonance
frequencies and the bass response will start to fade at a higher
frequency.

It can be very tricky to find the right combination of drivers to
improve the sound of a DCS pinball machine because it often doesn't
depend on the quality of the driver but how well suited it is to the
configuration of the machine as well as the synergy between the
backbox speakers and the bottom cabinet subwoofer.  If a driver with a
lower sensitivity but better bass performance is used in the lower
cabinet then an L-pad can be added to the drivers in the upper cabinet
in order to adjust their level for a better blend and this is

With that said, I have no plans of upgrading the speakers in my Shadow
machine anytime soon because I'm satisfied with the way things sound

1) Decent cheap speakers do sound much better than the factory
speakers. There is some stuff in DCS worth having, especially at the
low end. But anything more than a few tens of dollars is too much.

2) Sensitivity expressed in dB W/m is independent of impedance - the
only question is, can your amp drive it, and with DCS the answer is
yes. DCS has a pretty high drive voltage.

3) The nature of the pinball cabinet is that any speaker will struggle
- it is a large, leaky box. A stuff suspension is all that you need
