Re: IJ plane gun LED question

Caution,

The mcd rating is a function of the area the light is falling upon.
Often the extremely high mcd Clear LED's such as these have a very
narrow viewing angle +- 10 to 12 degrees in this case, resulting in a
higher mcd rating than say a +- 60 degree LED, but not actually
putting out more light, just the same in a smaller viewing angle.
So unless the LED is pointing more or less directly at the player the
brightness is low as the light is concentrated off the viewing axis.
It is comparable to looking at a flashlight, off axis it is visible
but not really bright, on axis, amazingly bright.
Or another way, the difference between looking at a flood light vs a
spot light.
A clear lens will not look very bright off axis and is better for
lighting up some object, a diffuse lens has a wide viewing angle is
meant for direct view as an indicator, and is more appropriate for
this application. I would also suggest using the smallest LED you can
find, the larger 5mm would be out of scale for this application in my
opinion.

I need to replace one of the gun LEDs on my IJ and I figured while I
was at it, they could probably both use a nice upgrade to a brighter
5mm LED. I think most people use a red 3000mcd, but I have a different
idea and I need some advice.
I want to replace the red LEDs with orange LEDs, so it looks more like
gunfire, plus I was thinking about using these:

In theory, it would result in a much brighter firing appearance from
the plane. However, I was hoping someone could tell me if 12000mcd is
out of control and would just fry the circuit board (and my eyes) in
the process.

Thanks!
