Re: Blues Brothers Pinball

The original BB is one of my favorite movies. I've had it on my HDDVR
for a year+ now without erasing it. I'm not going to say whether BB
is financially a good theme for a pinball machine, but it sure would
be something I'd be interested in. I'd say at this point Monty
Python, Blues Brothers, AC/DC and the Three Stooges are my top 4 dream
themes.

As for those who doubt the interest of the younger generation; I have
had a completely different experience. Over the last few years I've
seen a lot of teenagers who love the Blues Brothers. These kids watch
DVDs over and over again until the have them memorized. A great movie
like BB has the replayability they need. My cousin's 17 year old sat
here in my living room a few weeks ago and watched the movie in its
entirety. He was totally stoked when he found out I had it in HD. I
made sure the sub woofer was set to rock the house at his request.

It is a more popular movie than it was back then, but would not make a
good license for a pin because it is meaningless to the youth of
today. The kids of today would not be able to tell you the character
names or even what the plot of the movie is. Dan Akroyd hasn't
headlined a movie in 15 years or more and Belushi is dead. There are
not going to make any more Blues Brother movies after how bad Blues
Brothers 2000 did...and Akroyd was in that. This would make a
horrible pinball license for Stern, because really the only people who
would think this is a good license to use for a pin are the same
pinball who already play pinball anyway. It wouldn't bring in new
players.

I agree with mr. Manley.  Again, just because a movie is on TBS 10
times a week and "everyone I know just loves it!," doesn't mean it's a
great idea for a pinball machine. By that logic we should go ahead and
start petitions for a "Wedding Crashers" or "Truman Show" pinball
machine.

Let me first state, I'm not disagreeing with either of you as I agree
it may be a stretch as a good license to develop as a big moneymaker.
Playing devils advocate....

However, not sure I can completely agree with "kids today just don't
know the characters".  Drake & Josh on Nick is a huge TV show with
kids. A scene dedicated to the Blues Brothers (done quite well I might
add) is hard to glance over with generalizations about what kids do or
don't recognize with today. Nostalgia is IN right now and  music by
queen diva Aretha R-E-S-P-E-C-T in a game may make kids turn their
heads. Then again maybe not more than a Transformers or GI Joe pinball
game. But tell me a kid who knows Elvis? That pin was designed for
adults to relate to and put in a quarter.  Why not the BB for that
audience and the niche for nostaliga? The license likely would not
cost nearly as much as the aforementioned.

Playing devils advocate with myself, I still think there are 20 better
current theme ideas out there (and Buck Hunter isn't one of them) but
intellectucally need to respectfully challenge the lead balloon
comment. :-)- Hide quoted text -

If "Nostalgia is IN right now" then why is pinball in such a hurtbox?
They may have parodied Blue Brothers on the show, but that doesn't
mean the kids understood it or if they did, cared about it at all.
Look at all the inuendo stuff in Shrek that is there for the adults
who have to tolerate kids movie after kids movie.  It was not meant to
be understood by the kids watching it.  And just because kids
recognize black suits, hats and sunglasses doesn't mean they know or
care about the Blues Brothers.  Every kid recognizes Elivs on the
backglass of an Elvis pin, doesn't mean any of them care enough to
play the game.  I think Stern has proven to a fault that marketing
games for the older audience, who are already more likely to play a
pinball machine anyway, doesn't work.  Just look at games like Elvis
and WOF.  Like it or not, they need to cater to the youth and what
they like in hope that the kids *might* care enough about the theme to
put a few quarters in the pin and going back to 30 years to a movie no
one really cared about even then is not the way to do it.
