First, sort your messages by date. Then, click the "message thread" bar at the far left. At least I have mine set up on the far left. I'm not sure what the default is. Finally, after reading the thread, you can click the back button on the toolbar. Then, click the message that got you into that thread, and click the sort by date bar. You really don't have to click the back button, if you recall what message got you into the thread.
Clear as mud, right?! :-)
I find Thunderbird much easier than GG, because GG only shows 10 messages at a time when in tree mode. Then again, I've used a Mozilla NG reader for years prior to finally changing to T-Bird about a month ago.

OK...time for the Thunderbird experts to lend a little help..
I like google groups most of the time. Why?
1. It's accessible anywhere, including work
2. Posts are sorted by last message posted and if I click on a
message, I see the whole message tree.
This last feature doesn't seem possible with Thunderbird. If a T-Bird
user can point me toward how to make Thunderbird do that, I'd probably
never use google again at home (except to search the archives).
Thanks Thunderbird users!
