It is also possible the resistor is fine, and the opto IR transmitter
has gone bad or has a loose solder joint. If there is no load on the
resistor it will not get warm/hot.

Well, here's the problem. It can't be a break far away from the board
because all the other optos receive the very same signal, and they're fine.
This is only output, so they all have the same 12v and ground going to them.
It's only a five pin header for 7 optos (2 each).... the 5 pins are 12v,
12v, key (nothing), ground ground..... so unless two of those are dedicated
to opto 4.... the problem is much closer to home.
My question is: Do these resistors go bad? By the sounds of it, the answer
is no.

I'd suspect the header pin at the PCB first.
These earlier games with the 'new' style ball trough are notorious for
vibration damage, hence the update kit WMS released for them with the
grommets etc.

Remove one lead of the resistor, and check it with an ohm meter and see
if it's the right value. That way the resistor isn't in circuit and could
give you a false reading.
Odds are it's good, and for some reason it's not getting power. Then you
need to find the break. Could be on the trough opto board, or anywhere
along the way back to the driver board in the head. Even a loose wire on
the opto driver board under the playfield. LTG :)

I'm nearing fixing everything on my pin. Last two things are sound
(should have that fixed with new roms tomorrow) and one ball trough opto
not registering.
There's a large blue resistor on the transmitter board side is somewhat
cool compared to the others. My trough opto 4 isn't firing, and so the
resistor number 4 isn't that warm (the others are hotter than hell when
the game's on).
Is this telling me that the resistor is bad? A lead to or away from it
is bad? If it's not getting warm, perhaps there's a break somewhere from
the 12v to this? How do you fix something like this? Can I just take a
wire from the 12 v to the resistor directly to bybass whatever problem
it's running into along the way? Which side of the resistor is ground
and which is 12? Thank you.- Hide quoted text -
