A pin in the late 1970's is going to run about $1700.00, and on quarter
play, no way they pay for themselves in a couple weeks. In that era, late
1970's, even a video game like Asteroids isn't going to pay for itself in a
couple weeks.

Not true at all - for the most part machines 'worked' - they were making
so much money then (late 70s) it wasn't uncommon to pay for a machine in a
couple weeks - it would PROBABLY work for a couple weeks. After it was
paid for if it broke it went into the warehouse, parts robbed from it when
they did need to get a machine running.
In fact operators that had competent repairpeople were more likely to go
out of business as their costs were higher.
