That's strange that your game would be hard to hear, even when the
volume is turned up. The game should go plenty loud, even without
modifying the speakers. That might be a sign of another problem. You
should be able to turn the sound up to 26 or so, without it
distorting.
Definitely make the recommended mod of cutting the two small
capacitors on the sound board, as seen in the other posts.
Check the bottom cabinet speaker. Balls falling off of the gorilla
basement playfield might have damaged the speaker.
I put a Pinball Pro kit in my Congo game. It went in easily, and did
the job. There are other solutions out there that are both cheaper
and better, but this was good enough for me, given my limited
knowledge of both pinball and audio wiring.
The nice thing about the Pinball Pro kit is that it has a tone control
on it, so you can turn down the treble, to bring out more bass without
increasing the overall game volume.
Now, my Congo game has enough bass to rattle the glass when playing,
and when the volcano erupts, you can feel it vibrate your hands.
There's also some good thumping bass during the Mystery award
animation.
At California Extreme, I had the game volume at 24. It could have
been louder, but I didn't want to risk damaging the sound board.
Hopefully it was loud enough for players to hear and feel it.
