My cousin lived there for 10 years but we didn't visit much during that time. From an old 25 year memory inside a 51 year old, I remember all the pineapple fields everywhere before they were ripped out and replaced with "million dollar shacks". The road to Hana isn't something all will enjoy but the sceneries are beautiful. Scuba diving was an interesting experience there since I never did it before (my cousin knew where to score some tanks). Swimming in a school of fish was neat. Fun times with lots to do on Maui if you know where to go (and where not to). We bartered for everything while there with a suitcase full of frozen steaks we brought in from the mainland. Thinking back, this was funny but it worked. :)
Since you frequent there, I'm curious about the old bowling alley on the windward side of the island. Have you been to it and is it still there? From memory, it had 5 working old woodrail pins inside. If it's still there, it must really be run down by now since it was bad back then. It's in a rough area not visited by "howley boys" after dark, I'm sure that hasn't changed. As an avid bowler at that time, I remember it odd that this was a bowling alley and there was sand all over the floor inside. If the alleys are gone now, I bet the pins are no longer in existence too.
Ah memories, go out and make some. ;)
