Re: Convert Bally Paragon Pop Bumper lamps to 555?

I too replace the junk bayonett sockets with wedges.

Use the ones with flat leads, not round wire leads. Before you secure the
leads underneath, press the wedge flat against the side of the inside of the
pop body. While holding it there, bend the leads around underneath to hold
it fast. Then reinstall staples to hold the leads (don't forget unsulation
tubing on the leg through the bracket). Solder. Back topside, install a 555
(or lower power equilavent) and lean it over so it doesn't touch the cap or
body (but closer to the body). That is how I upgrade (IMO) them, it is not
necessarily the best method.

Hi.

I am in the process of doing a full blown shop job on my Bally
Paragon.

One of the Pop Bumper Metal Ring broke and I removed the pop bumpers
from the playfield to clean and rebuild. Now that I have removed the
lamp socket in the pop bumper, I started thinking about replacing the
44/47 socket with a 555 lamp socket.

Outside of changing the original asthetics of the game, is there a
reason that I should not make the switch?

If I change the Pop Bumper Lamps, should I go ahead and change out the
rest of the lamps as well to keep them all the same?

Thoughts? Opinions?

555 will sit too high and burn the cap. Don't do it. Also there are no
555's anywhere else on the game.

I replace the socket and use the lower profile 51 bulbs in them to avoid
cap burn.

I always replace the bayonet 47 sockets with the 555 wedge. Gottlieb
pops are shorter, and will burn the cap. but I have not had an issue
with any Bally games. I've probably converted 30+ games by now. I
guess we all have different ways of doing things.
