Does it even only *sometimes* stop the ball in front of the target and
prevent it from being hit? I had a Shadow for a few years and don't
remember it doing that, seems like the ball always hit the target and
the dropping was controlled or allowed mechanically.

Yeah. First time through shadow multiball, the magnet stops it every
time. Next time through (especially the 4th or 5th), for each hit you
have to put on the wall to light the lock target the game doesn't stop
the ball and instead the ball whacks the wall (without it dropping).

Also for Hotel Monolith, hits to the hotel before it's visible aren't
stopped.
