Re: Balls Magnetized

For the record any steel will magnetize, some more then others.
As I said, higher carbon will hold more of a charge.
What you call chrome steel actually is just tool steel with a high carbon
content.
The chrome look is because of the purity and higher carbon content.
All steel has carbon in it. You want balls with less carbon if you are
worried about magnetism.

I had read it was the carbon balls that are resistant to magnetism and that
the
'mirror glazed premium' chrome balls will pick up magnetism in games where
magnets are used.

The higher the carbon content the more it will magnetize.

from Pinball Life, and I put new balls in it as well. Played a few games
and
had the balls stick in the ball lock and not let them drop when the post
dropped, I figure it is a burr or something, but lo and behold, these
balls
are magnetized too, and quite strong! When I put all 4 of them on the
lockbar/glass edge and try to roll them in a chain I can pull the first
ball
and they are all dragged along, in either direction!

Is this a problem with the balls I have, or is it just the games with
Magnets really affect the balls? I am not sure where I got this batch of
balls, but I have had them for a while and they just sit in a plastic
Bin in
an "oily" bag.

When you have a few magnetized balls and they are stuck together when
you
try to roll them in a chain, the 1st goes one direction, the 2nd goes
the
other way 3rd goes same as first etc, so it is like gears, and the
actually
stop the "Chain" as they work like brakes on each other.

Use carbon steel pinballs. You have chrome steel.
