start turning when it should, but if you reach in and give it a nudge,
it will then run well until it is shutoff for a few days, then the
problem returns. Is there anything that can be done or is this just
one of those things?

I'd try yanking the motor and seeing if I could open it up. You don't have
much to lose, and some of those motors (not all!) come apart easily. Never
tried opening the creech motors, though.
