Nick,
The 6 100K resistors are not what's causing your display to show all
zeros.  Since you eliminated the display's connector by swapping it w/
a different one, then it's probably the decoder, or less likely
several segment driver transistors.  Replace the decoder, preferably
w/ a socket, and you'll probably be back in business.  Of course it
could be some issue w/ the glass display itself, in which case you're
SOL, but I'm still betting on the decoder. Since the resistors got hot
and burnt some of the trace, I'd recommend replacing them too, w/ the
1/2 watters, but be careful when you remove them or you may ruin the
trace some more. They get brittle and lift easily if they've been
scorched.  Still easily repairable however if the solder pads do come
off.

Don't knock your brains out trying to over diagnose this thing, it's
really a no brainer.  Reflow the header pins.  Then if there's any
single digit problems, replace the resistors first, and then the digit
driver transistors next.  Any segment problems, try the segment driver
transistors first, and then if still bad the decoder.

That's about it.  Parts are cheap so the brute force method applies
here (imho)

Thanks Steve and Cody. Knowing that the boards are repairable or
replaceable, I think I will take your advice and go ahead and repair
this one and work on learning to troubleshoot with something a little
more straight forward. As a last resort, I can get another board and
have someone repair the board later and keep it as a spare.

Thanks again,
Nick
