Thing Opto Location

Where exactly is the opto for Thing on The Addams Family? Thing loses
track of the ball when it retrieves it. I did an opto test and it
does not register when Thing is in the Down position. I've checked
through the owner's manual and cannot find the opto. Do I have to
take off the Thing cover on the underside of the machine to get to the
opto? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
