[Rant on] I shipped a PF yesterday at the UPS store, thinking that
they and Fed Ex were roughly the same price. These guys charged me $90
to ship a 20lb. box (37lb dimensional weight charge due to size) from
CA to IL with $1500 insurance coverage(insurance coverage nearly
doubled the cost). I almost didn't do it, but just pulled the trigger
as I'd gone all the way down there. I even searched RGP beforehand to
see what people were using, as I thought I'd seen people saying they
were paying $30 - $40 to ship PFs (I definitely should have gotten
online quotes from both before ever getting in the truck!). After
hearing their quote, I thought I must've remembered it wrong, or that
they were older posts when costs were cheaper. The box got picked up
by the driver and taken away as I was leaving the store, so when I
found out that Fed Ex ground would've shipped it for about $40, it was
already too late. Also, the UPS Store charges way more for insuring
than UPS does as they are a franchise store, and don't get the deal
that you would get if you simply created a shipment online and dropped
off at a UPS distribution center ($2 per $100 vs. $0.75 per $100). The
guy I talked to got all pissy with me, saying how much harder it is to
make a claim through Fed Ex if it's lost or damaged, and was overall a
real jerk. I'll not use UPS ever again to ship a PF or patronize that
store again. Of well. Just thought I'd put this post out there as a
warning for anyone else who thinks UPS and Fed Ex charge about the
same to ship a PF. [Rant off]
