I replaced my furnace/AC with a higer efficiency Trane unit about 5
years ago and am glad I did.
My unit was about 20 years old as well.
I installed a higher efficiency 2 stage furnace. I want to say it is
rated at 93% efficient. It draws its combustion air directly from
outside the house as well as exhausts directly outside as well. It
uses PVC pipe for the combustion and exhaust air ducting. The 2 stage
aspect works where at the first stage the fan runs longer but the
furnace burns at a lower temperature for the higher outdoor
temperatures where you still need to heat. The second stage burns
hotter where the outside temperatures are lower and the demand is
higher. So it only runs the higher gas consumption when you get into
the more extreme temperatures.
We installed a 14 SEER (sp?) efficiency AC unit. 5 years ago that was
a step or two more efficient than the standard efficiency. Now, I
heard recently, code requires a minimum of a 14 SEER efficiency in our
area (Kansas City).
The AC is the most expensive part of the system between the compressor
and the condensor. Not sure if they will be able to mate a new
furnace to your previous condensor unit from a physical standpoint but
it's worth a try. Around here they sell you the AC and often throw in
the furnace for free. Obviously they are still making their money.
I have a smaller house - 2100 SF on a 900 SF footprint. Gas bills in
the dead of winter have not exceeded $175 in the worst months and
electric bills in the heat of the summer here have not exceeded
$160. It gets pretty cold here - single digits for a few weeks each
winter, and pretty hot - upper 90's for weeks each summer.
Good luck.

Hi All.
It looks my furnace is on it's last leg. It is about 20 yrs old and in bad
shape. We had to turn it off tonight because there was a gas leak and the
thing is rusted out.. Anyway, does anyone have a suggestion as to what
brand
to go with? We currently have a Trane XL 90 with central air. The central
air part works fine so I'd like to get away with not replacing it if
possible.. Any ideas? My games like to be warm in the winter and cool in
the summer :)
