Re: Why colored LEDs?

Bruce,

I was looking on your site for some bulbs to use as replacements
in my Family Guy. I went to select a pair of Yellow #89's (to replace
the front left and right flashers) and was offered some options; red,
amber, and white I believe. What is the deal with the options, and
which do you think would be best for my application?

Sorry if this has been asked before.

Thanks!
Jason

I'm hoping to get some LED's soon. Why all the different colors?
Doesn't the color come from the insert, and them being backlit?
There's no colored incandescents under any playfields last I checked.
Seems to me adding color to the bulb would just dim it down. WHAT UP

I started using LEDs recently. I bought a bunch at The York Show last
year fromhttp://www.bcspinball.com/

I found in my Galaxy pin, that using all cool white LED bulbs in the
head create a bright flourescent like glow without tons of heat, which
is a good thing considering summer is coming, and the backglass is a
$250 repro.

At Allentown, I am planning to buy red leds for my Gorgar pin. For
some reason, that game puts out a LOT of heat and every one I have
ever seen has burned boards and extreme burn marks in the head from
incandescents. I have found most importantly, to have LEDs in bumpers
under those caps.

Yellow works for a cap with a yellow starbust pattern. Sure beats a
future burn mark on a brand new cap once the incandescent bulb is
ready to burn out.

Bummer LEDS weren't around in the 50's though. So many Gottliebs I've
seen especially from the late 50's with plastics melted beyond
recognition.

For GI should you use the "warm white" or "super white"?

What should you use under the playfield?

Depends on the look you want the game to have. Super white or W2
Bluish tint white that i sell looks good on the Scifi, Colorful games
that you want to get the brightest LEDs out there. I use White (W1)
bulbs on my Monster bash, they are not as bright as the W2, but they
have a pure white look without the Bluish tint. I have also White
Warm 1 (WW1) which is same color match as a 44 bulb and White Warm 2
(WW2) as color match to 47 bulbs, these are not as bright at W1 or W2
but are great color match under white inserts which you want that
Incandescent look. I actually use both in my MB inserts use WW2 for
the Moon Fever inserts and use W1 for the Bride inserts to make the
inserts look different and pop.

I am current working on a new LED for use in GI that is 4-5x brighter
than the current single LED bulbs i offer ( and what is available on
the market). I am trying to have these to demo for Allentown but i
dont know if i will have them in machine. Been working with the
manufacture to get the Light output, lens and other issues resolved
before i really push these. They will as bright as my 5LED 555 bulbs,
but using only one chip and look similar to my current Frosted lens
bulbs.

As for the mixing of the colors to make these White, no these are
single chip LEDs that are of materials that produce these color when
powered. Yes i can make LEDs that make white by mixing 3 RGB LEDs, but
that is more expensive and do not look right in use for pinball.

As stated earlier, the LEDs are monocromatic ( single color emitters)
not like Incandescent bulb which output the full spectrum of colors
(rainbow). Even the White bulbs do this, that is why you can not use
a white LED under a color insert, it does not have enough light energy
in that color spectrum to excite the Plastic color. The best results
are to match the colors of the LEDs to the insert, domes, and pop
bumper plastic colors to get the best results. That is why i offer 14
different color LEDs, also some are cheaper to make because of the
materials used to make different color LEDs are more expensive plus
there are patent license on certain colors which restrict the pricing
of the LEDs. These should be running out soon :-) so i can lower my
prices even more.

If you have any questions about using LEDs Replacement bulbs please
email me or come see me at Allentown. I will have 6-7-8 games fully
outfitted with LEDs (AFM, STTNG, BSD, Funhouse, Big Hurt, DM ...). I
have been experimenting with LEDs for over 2.5year and been getting
them manufacture to my specs for over 2 years since i was disappointed
with what was availble at the time i started. Again it is not rocket
science, but lucky enough i am a rocket scientist :-).

Regards,

Bruce
