As a temp fix, I put a piece of dead drop foam right above the lock
pole, which prevents it from angling up as the coil pulls it back, and
it seems to work fine now. If the couch weld fix is the official fix
for this problem, I'll order one of those.

Yes, Yes, Yes... How's that for an official answer? ;)... That is
exactly what happens... The problem with the foam (I did something
similar) is that the actual bracket will continue to get worse, it is
a temporary fix for sure...
.
