Jim-
I should add that every situation is different but I always try to act
according to the above belief.
Also, regarding "not getting it" by Attam. I think what most of us
"get" has to do with our own life experiences. I know others who take
advantage because they've been taken advantage of, so they figure they
might as well strike first. Their view of "people" is very different
than my view. They have plenty of stories where they've been screwed,
mislead etc... that prove "people" are not to be trusted. That most
good deeds have an alterior motive. However, their "friends" do not
fall into this category.
I have plenty of stories where people are generous, helpful and
trustworthy that prove my beliefs about "people". For me, both friends
and strangers fall into this category. I like to think that I've
returned much of the kindness and good deals that have been shown to
me.
The thing I do "get" is the way we are in the world seems to have a
huge impact on the way the world is to us.
Okay, off of soapbox.

There is nothing wrong with that. But, I still think in this example,
the people probably paid nothing for the machines. If they know
anything about pinball, they'd know why this is such a bad price for
them, but apparently they don't, so I doubt they went out and bought
these games at "normal" price and then did this. Again, I'd maybe try
to get some info as to *why* they are selling the games, and if it was
for an "emergency", I'd talk to them. I agree that they probably have
these games, don't need 'em, and just want to dump them. But I still
stand by that if they got them for FREE, and are now making $1k
PROFIT, they are not being "ripped off". Did somebody get "ripped
off" when these people paid a price of... ZERO?
I know it's speculation and assumption, but I think it's a probable
one.
Why don't people feel bad when they're paying $3500 HUO for a game
that somebody else bought NIB for $4k 3 months ago? Doesn't your
conscience feel like you're ripping THAT GUY off? Or just to be
"nice" you sould give him the $500?

You are not considering CURRENT value. It makes NO difference if
the seller paid ZERO or $10,000,000. If the CURRENT value is about
$1000 then offering $100 because they don't know it, is WRONG. If they
paid 10,000,000 and you offer $1000 that's RIGHT. In this situation
you KNOW the value and they don't.
What if it were a 10 year old kid with a rare baseball card that he
probably paid 10 cents for. Give him a quarter and that's 150% profit
for him. You sell for $100 bucks and sleep good tonight. Too bad for
him, he doesn't know what its worth.
Retail price of a new game is considerably higher than what its
worth 3 months later. The buyer DOES know the value to a certain
extent and so do you. 100 or 200 bucks either way is within a margin
of error.
A person desperate for money should not be taken advantage of. Pawn
shops, payday stores, etc. all rely on ignorance, and desperation of
the client. We should aspire to somewhat higher conduct.
