Re: Upconverting DVD Players

Adding another couple of nuggets to the discussion:

Make sure you are using the right connections. I have been told that
even though Upconverting DVD players include component video jacks,
not all of them support upconvert output over anything other than the
HDMI port.

This is a big deal for me, since I am using an older INFOCUS LP530
projector. With the media module add on attached I got component
video.
Imagine my chagrin when I found out the component video is only
supported at the lowest resolutions and not at HD resolutions. The
projector supports 1024x768 native, and can handle higher resolutions,
so 720p or 1080i was a do-able thing, provided the image comes though
either the M1 port or the SVGA port.

HOWEVER...

That meant I had to go back and dig through ebay to find an X2VGA or
an Vdigi VD-Z3 VGA Component Transcorder (got a VD-Z3 for $40 on
eBay).
That converts the component video signal to a VGA signal that the
projector will accept.

Otherwise I was just stuck watching video on it at SVHS resolution.

Some of you are at this point scratching your heads and wondering why
I am bothering with all of this. Cost.
I paid ~$100 for a three year old great THX- Surround 600 Watt amp on
eBay.
The 5 satellite speakers: Free (thrown in on a PC sound system
purchase on CL)
The LP-530 Projector: Free
(given to me at a previous job after I upgraded the firmware to
qualify it to buy a replacement bulb they opted to buy something new
and gave it to me)
The projector bulb: Free (brother's christmas gift to the family.
2000 lumens @ 2000 hours, or 1600 lumens @ considerably longer -- its
always on whisper mode)
Subwoofer: $50 on CL
Current El-cheapo Memorex DVD player ($59)
Cable guides for the speaker wiring $200
APC UPS for the projector (avoid power outages killing the bulb) $39
on sale

End result, 110" display for one of the best Superbowl parties.

If you know of an low-price upconverting DVD player that does DIVX and
supports 720p output to the component jacks, let me know.
As for the HD-vs-BluRay? Feh. Walmart sells most of the DVD's for
under $10. The latest for under $20. My kids like my popcorn better,
and so adios movie theaters for anything other than the biggest
movies. I'll skip the HD stuff for a couple years and use my $$ on
pinball parts.
