Tech Tip: Fixing Stern SAM USB drive compatibility problems

If you have a USB stick that doesn't work on your Stern SAM machine,
it's probably because the "bootFLASH" is out of date. Updating this
ROM to the new revision (2.3) should fix the compatibility problems.
The program for loading new software onto Stern SAM machines is
contained on the bootFLASH ROM (U9) on the CPU board. This ROM is not
updated each time new software is loaded, so you are stuck with
whatever revision was programed at the factory. Unless you have a new
machine (WoF), your bootFLASH is probably out of date. Make sure you
have version 2.3 by looking at the sticker on the U9 EPROM itself (or
by entering the USB update menu).
Today I went to program the new WPT 1.14 code, but couldn't find the
128 meg USB stick that I got from Stern. Instead I tried a 1 gig USB
drive and it didn't work at all. I reprogrammed the U9 EPROM with the
version 2.3 bootFLASH code from Stern's website and now that same 1
gig USB drive works just fine!

For those without ROM burners, I suggest contacting Stern (or John
Wart) for the latest revision.
Good luck
John
