I have e-mailed John to ask about the ground question. I am wondering
if the idea of soldering directly to the board rather than using the
molex connector is to bypass the bad connections of the molex.

Noooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Never solder wires directly to the board! Replace the contacts and you'll
be set for years to come.

Still have not heard where to find a 9.1 ohm resistor if mine check
out bad. Also, I found that Rat Shack does not have MPS-U45
transistors so will be curious where to find one if mine is bad.

I appreciate those who have answered me so far.

Pete

9.1ohm resistors
here:http://www.greatplainselectronics.com/products.asp?cat=19
But these don't fail often.

MPSU45's are obsolete. There are still a few around. But a currently
manufacturered exact replacement is made by Central Semiconductor. Part
number CENU45. You can find there

But this is what everyone recommends...John at Flippers.com has this
grounding method and the pictures show him soldering wires righ to the
board. Am I seeing these wrong? Here is the link:

Ahhh... disconnect on my end.
I thought you were saying to remove the connectors and directly solder the
wires to the board.  Now THAT would have been a mess.

I do something similar to what John shows in his pictures.  What I do is
drill a small hole in an out of the way location on the board.  On the back
side of the board - I run a wire from the boards ground to a screw.  Mount
the screw in the hole and tighten it down.  Now I run another wire to the
system ground using ring terminals to the screws.  This way there are no
haning wires from the board.

so, don't use the grounds from the plug connectors to ground to the
chassis?
