actually the best was to get a soda was to file a penny down to the size of
a dime. Use to do it all the time when drinks where 55 and you would get a
nickel back. So you got a drink for a penny. But it did take several hours
to file dimes down.

The best way? I don't think so. I worked in the Chemistry Dept. of
Case Institute of Technology right out of high school as an inventory
stores clerk. Our trick was to immerse a penny in hydrochloric or
sulphuric acid (I can't recall which) for some set period of time
like 10 seconds. What remained worked perfectly to get a 10 cent
bottle of pop.

You probably did it in nitric acid. Do you recall a choking brownish-orange
gas being released as you did so? Copper won't react with hydrochloric or
sulfuric.

Now here's a good trick. File the edge off completely from a 1982 or newer
penny and drop that in HCl. These pennies have a zinc filling which will
react with the acid resulting in a separation of the foil-thin head and
tail. Or just file a small section of the edge, drop it in acid and
eventually the penny will become hollow and float to the surface (lifted by
the hydrogen gas inside that forms).

So Jim I gotta ask you this question. Did you ever take some sodium or
potassium from the stock room and "play" with that? Fun stuff!
