Re: Tech: Bally Solid State 6-digit repair also WTB

Is there anyone out there that repairs Bally Solid State displays
cheaply? I have about 15 I think in various states from excellent to
broke. IE: One worked great but has a busted nipple. All the digits
work but the display is burnt but could use that to fix another that a
digit is missing, etc. I see that bigdaddy (Kulpa?) still sells the
repair kits. I COULD buy the kits and fix them myself at $7 each. But
that wouldn't guarantee that I can fix some of the displays that are
missing a single digit, etc. Just thought i'd check to see if there
was an expert out there.

With new glass running ~$40 apiece, I dunno about 'cheaply' - I'd rather buy the tested working ones that pop up from time to time. Mayfair amusements still sells these although the price has gone up in the last couple years.

Question 2. What are the thoughts on replacing the 1/4 watt with 1/2
watt resistors? Should I just go ahead and do all before my good
working displays get burnt also?

The 100k resistors are the ones to upgrade, I do it if any look burnt (the resistor not the display.) If you don't leave them on for a long time I wouldn't worry about this..... if you're doing something else to the display at the same time and have the time to do it, sure.

Question 3. Anyone with 6-digit parts they want to sell please let me
know. Also was wondering if anyone has a nice supersonic BG available?

You can use the Stern 6 digit displays too they are identical (the 7 digit ones are not). A lot of time the stern displays get lower bids on ebay because people do not realize this..... I bought several displays for about $3 apiece because of this and about 1/2 of them worked.

The burnt glass is only fixable with a new tube AFAIK so moving a weak/burnt glass from one display to another is not really fixing anything. The other problems you reference are actually easy fixes, look at steve kulpa's site for info on this also the marvin guides if they're back. Displays are pretty straightfoward on these machines and there are no unavailable parts like williams 7180's chips etc.
