Re: LED Conversion

Just thought I'd chime in with my personal experience with converting
to LED's...

I have a dedicated arcade room in my basement. In this room (12'x17')
I have 5 pins (MM, ToM, MB, SS, CV) a dedicated Mame Cabinet, 3
american slots (IGT S+ and 2 Bally 6000's). Oh and each pin has an
external powered subwoofer connected to it. Well, you can probably
guess what happens in this room when I have everything powered on. It
feels like a sauna after about an hour. I added a return air to the
furnace in this room which only provides a little relief. After I saw
Bruce's pins at Allentown (www.bcspinball.com) I thought I'd give
LED's a shot. Originally I wanted to convert to LED's because I
thought that they looked soooooo cool. After converting most of my
pins (including an RFM in another room) I can say that they make a
DRAMATIC difference in heat. I happened to use a a device which
measures power usage on my MM before and after conversion. The MM
before conversion was drawing about 2.15 amps in attract mode with no
power saver. After conversion, it draws .60 amps. Now there is no heat
at all coming off of the machine.
I changed out ALL of the bulbs on my pins. I really mean all, this
includes the start button and coin door, etc...
I am still waiting on the 44's in warm white so that I can finish my
ToM. (Wouldn't look right with super white)

So from my experience I have the following thoughts:

Pros:
- Inserts really look good
- No Heat
- I personally like the look of the super white GI bulbs on certain
pins (MB and CV)
- Will last a long long time
- Electricity savings

Cons:
- EXPENSIVE (expect to spend over $300 per pin)
- P2K thinks bulbs are bad (only side effect is a credit dot, bulbs
work fine)
- GI's have a slight flicker to them which might bother some folks (at
first this bugged me, but not anymore, almost like running your
monitor at 60Hz refresh rate)
- They seem to not be quite as bright as the incandescents

Dino,

Thanks for the review. I appreciate your business and real interest in
the LEDs. I appreciate all the feedback i can get to improve the
products.

As for the cons,

Expensive, yes, but the savings on power, heat cycles causing damage,
and less power draw through the PDB save the life cycle of the board.
So in a way it levels out over time. Improves the look of the game,
about as expensive as other mods people do to their games any how, but
this one helps preserve the game, lowering the heat damage from the
cycling ( on and off, high and low temperatures). Dont get me wrong
still get some heat from the Transformer, but lowering the amp draw
helps and no bulb heat.

The P2k machines and Capcom both have the same problem in a way. they
both sense for amperage to test for burnt out bulbs. their is a way to
fix this but i need to know that there is enough market to implement
the fix. This problem has been resolve in Trucks that do the same
thing, that have converted to LED bulbs.

The GI flickering can be solve by turning off power save mode, you
dont need this with LEDs. The LEDs still will dim during the game as
the incandescents bulbs, but the attract mode i were the flickering is
the most evident.

Again, thanks again Dino.
