Just picked up a really nice looking Buck Rogers. Playfield in great
shape, cabinet looks good, backglass just a scratch. Grabbed it for
$100. Here is the kicker (no pun intended) power supply and driver
board are missing and the CPU board has a major burn mark and a crispy
critter of a chip in there. Obviously I need to do some board
replacement. Not knowing a lot about boards but enough to know I need
all three, I was wondering if anyone has done a comparison between GPE
and Rottendog on their Sys 1 power supplies? Either one better than
the other? How is the support?
Bill
I can't say a lot here as I have a pretty slanted view on which I feel would
be best.
But....
When comparing boards look to see which board uses heavier duty components
on their board (usually resulting in cooler & longer lasting parts). For
first example -- look at CR1 and CR2 of the original board and then look at
the competing designs. Sufficient filter capacitor values (higher or lower
than original)? All three supplies (including original) use linear supplies
on high voltage supply and dissipate *exactly the same* amount of heat.
Check which has higher wattage parts & bigger heat sinks for dissipating
this heat.
For info on my board -- you can find the manual on the bottom of this page:http://www.greatplainselectronics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=125%2D101
Now... regarding Pascal's board. I haven't used one but have looked at it
from a technical point of view. Excellent design and I would have no
problem recommending it to anybody. Pascal used a switching supply on his
high voltage supply - quite unique and an excellent idea. Plus MOSFET
drivers, opto isolation, low loss 5V supply... The only downside I see on
this board is the trade ratio of the USD to Euro at the present time.

Ed,
I appreciate you chiming in and providing the link to the details.
What you are describing makes sense. If the checkbook survives the
after Thanksgiving day sales I will be making my decision. I really
want to get the game up and running, but I am sure since the boards
are missing that there may be some playfield problems that I don't
know about. Until I get the boards though, I will spend my time
cleaning the field, new rubber and bulbs all around. For simplicity
sake I am leaning to Pascal's board, but the USD to Euro trade ration
has me concerned and I haven't heard back from him if he even has
stock.
