Re: Saw something at expo and looking for opinions

So, back to what I saw. I have a late F14 Tomcat with the D-11610
board for the display. I know that there are some strong opinions out
there about LED displays, not speaking of bulbs, but the segmented
displays. I noticed that Bay Area Amusements was there pushing
PinLEDs, and Marco Specialties was pushing there new stuff Pinscore.
Well my F14 definitely has a problem and after changing out one glass
I have sworn off changing out any others.

Displays are one of the more fun things I enjoy desoldering/soldering. Relatively straightforward. The thing I most don't enjoy soldering are chip sockets that you have to solder the top and bottom of.

I am now considering either
a PinLED or Pinscore display. I spoke to the big German, Andreas I
think his name is, who designed PinLED stuff. Nice guy, tough to
understand at times, but seemingly down to earth. He does have some
nice stuff, coloring not quite right on his displays I think and I
don't care for the grey, but that's okay. It works, that is what
matters. The Pinscore stuff also looked good. They got the coloring
right it looks like, and the black boards with the black faces looked
slick. The guy I spoke to was Mark. He wasn't the designer though,
but he supposedly was there. Nice features with the Pinscore, with
their brightness control, but I don't think I would ever use the push
button. What I didn't care to much for was the separate module with
the segment displays that would go in my F14. Extra pieces in my book
means possible failure point.

If the pinscore ones look black when they're off, those are the one's I'd buy, but I'm looking mostly for machines like 80s bally/stern where if you are not playing a 4 player game the displays are not lit, detracting from the original look. If all 4 displays are lit most of the time, the grey would not bother me as much.

It's the pricing that bothers me, until the LEDs are significantly cheaper than the equivalent original style displays/parts, no LED for me.

I wouldn't worry about extra parts being added - if they're all surface mount components anyway chances are you aren't going to be able to fix those yourself anyway.
