Only 4 bulbs were lit in the backbox insert panel. I thought, ah-ha,
it must be the GI connector. Checked it out. Someone had already
repinned it. Nice job too.
Then I noticed that all of the bulbs had that "silvery" look to the
top of them.
Sure enough EVERY 555 lamp in the insert was burned out (save 4). The
bulbs must not have been replaced since the day it came off the
production line as they were all older looking GE lamps. Yes, it can
happen...
I briefly looked at a LOTR just off location, and it had *every* bulb
burned out in the GI. At first I thought the circuits/connectors/
fuses might be bad, so didn't even bother troubleshooting it. I just
thought the GI on the game was completely bad, and so ignored it,
since the machine doesn't belong to me and I didn't want to dig into
it too deeply.
To my surprise, when raising the playfield, something wiggled and a
light came on! Wow, there was one bulb that still had a bit of life
in it. I'm glad the entire circuit wasn't bad, now I just relamped it
and now that's at least one strand of GI lights fully working again.
I'll experiment with blindly replacing bulbs on other strands soon.
There's something seriously bad with the quality of #44/#47 and #555
bulbs made these days. Ever since GE stopped making them, they just
don't seem to last very long anymore. A NIB Stern Spiderman game had
2 bulbs go out in the first day on location. Hopefully pricing on LED
bulbs will come down soon, so that LED bulbs can be standard, before
the quality of the overseas bulbs drops down any farther.
