Re: PAPA 11 World Pinball Championships - August 14-17, 2008

Definitely agreed about the juniors division. It sounds silly, but I
like August better because that means it's just 10 months away instead
of 12, LOL. And like we've discussed, if there was an alternative to
the 'shootout' between top A,B,C qualifiers, but something more of a
level competition (as opposed to a World Champion pummeling a C
division player), would likely make people enter more, a good way to
add to the prize pool.

I suspect this will be different for PAPA 11. It was a good
experiment, but probably won't happen again this way.

And going back
to the entries thing, I was looking at individual players, and there
were a good number of people that finished high in the qualifiers, and
happened to achieve a great entry on their first or second entry and
that's it. Again, if they're that good, and if being FIRST was worth
something, maybe they'd throw in a few more entries to go for it.

Being first means getting to select all the games you want to play in
the finals, a huge advantage (usually). If I am qualified in middle
position toward the end of PAPA qualifying, I will throw a few more
entries (two) to try for a better qualifying position. I've never
been #1 qualifier at PAPA, though...

Can't put into words how friggin'
impressed I was with this event.

No doubt. It's a huge gift every year!

Being in the top 4 gave you the chance to pick games for your group.
Though, with only 4 games, picking 3 is not such a big deal, cause
chances are you'll play a game you want. And it doesn't seem to fail
that whenever it's MY choice of game, I seem to do bad on that round.
And if somebody picks a game I'm unhappy with, somehow I do well.
Maybe reverse psychology, but I'd think that a **substantial** reward
for 1st as opposed to 2nd,3rd, or 4th would generate more entries.
Here, 1st and 4th were the same, except the 'shootout'.
