Eric won't care how good you are as long as you have a good time -
which is hard not to do btw! As for camp, I teach chess to school kids
and during the summer I am an instructor at our overnight camp up near
Lake Arrowhead. It's 70-100 kids getting 3 lessons a day plus
tournament play and a whole bunch of food and fun in between.
I highly recommend a stop at Eric's - I posted an ad last year just
like yours and that's how we met! He's a great guy!

I was just up at Eric's last week during chess camp. Don't bother
looking anyplace else. As always, Eric is the most gracious host and
hardly even screams at me while I dropped a couple of high scores on
the Cirqus Voltaire. FT and WH2O both play fast and fun, and a BK that
is barely out of the box still was a blast - wish I would've put up
more than just a 500k+ score on it. Lucky is a great blast from the
past and RCT is actually quite fun - Eric even showed me the
similarity between the AF and the RCT - scarily similar playfields.
Thanks again, Eric!

Admittedly I am a little shy about dropping by someones place. Maybe
sometime when I get a chance to go to one of the pinball events I'll
run into you then I might be more comfortable about that. Plus I
never said I was good at playing them...just like to play them. Half
the time I'm playing my CV, my 3 1/2 year comes running up, throws
something on the middle of the glass and says she wants to play. All
the while I'm trying to pound the ringmaster into submission followed
by another ball up the left ramp while he's taunting me with "granny
ringmaster shoots better than you". Automatic recipe for a couple of
drained balls and a mediocre high score....or so I like to blame my
scores on this.
By the way....what is chess camp???- Hide quoted text -

As a follow up to myBigBeartrip for future travellers.
First I was not able to take Eric up on his gracious offer to play his
machines. Probably the worst decision I could have made....maybe
another time however.
I did stop by theBigBearArcade that people talked about...there
were about 5-6 machines including an Addam's Family and what is billed
as the largest pinball machine ever made. It uses billiards balls as
pinballs. It was fun to play once but its lack of complexity left
much to be desired. I believe there was also a cyclone and some other
classics. I remembered them when I returned from my trip but my delay
in writing this has degraded my memory. The machines at the arcade
were in poor repair and I played the AF machine endlessly because of
what must have been a broken switch or something which allowed one of
my friends to have an endless stream of balls.
Surprisingly I also found a TZ at the Alpine Slide. Alas, I was with
my children and couldn't play...however inspection of the machine
showed that it was very dirty (PF) but intact. I do not know how it
played.
That was it for me. Couldn't shake the pinball bug while I was on
vacation....and really coundn't find a fix while I was there. It
seems nowadays when you own your own machines, keep them meticulously
clean, and make sure they play fast without errors...you can only be
dissapointed with the machines out in the public.
Thanks again to Erik for the gracious invitation.- Hide quoted text -

Sounds like you got to play the Hercules kind of an oddity that should
be played just so you can say you played one.
I am amazed they had it working.
That TAF sounds like the one they had in the bowling alley in
Crestline before it folded and they just relocated it to BB without
shopping it.
Did the thing hand work or was it shut off?
Too bad you didn't play the blown out LW3 at the village pizza then
you could say you played in the mountain resorts tricrapfecta :)

Sorry I have been slow to respond to this. Wasn't expecting any
responses on the last post and didn't re-search for the thread.
Eric...The hand on the TAF was shut off. I thought I had gone to
Villiage pizza and didn't see any machines.
In response to dcerny...couldn't agree with you more about Big Bear
arcade and I share your emotions about the place. Darn...I didn't
think to go into the Bowling Barn. The party I was with felt bowling
was rather expensive there, so we didn't take the kids there. That
would have been a fun day though and I have been dying to see a
Spiderman and obviously play it.
I loved the trip and will likely be back soon...probably in the winter
so the kids can play in the snow. In the future we will probably stay
near Arrowhead which I believe is closer to Eric's place.
Thank you once again for all the help and info
.
