I need some help with testing transistors. If I follow the advice of the online repair guides, they say to just put my DMM on Diode and ground the black lead and touch the red lead to the top of all of the transistors to check them. This really doesn't seem like it is "testing" the transistors.
I have seen other sites that say to touch the black lead to the top of the transistor and the red lead to each of the legs and check the reading. It is supposed to be between 400 and 600. But I get readings that are all over the place, from 615 to 710.
Can someone give me a little help in the best way to check transistors.
Thanks All,

In addition to the sound advice already provided,
A great aid in trouble shooting transistors is the board itself. The
driver board for example is made up of symmetrical circuits meaning
the same circuit repeated over and over for the coils as an example.
You can compare your reading from one circuit to the other. You don't
need to concern yourself to much with which leads to put on the
transistor as long as you do it the same for each circuit you test.
You don't need to remove anything other than the board itself. You
should get basically the same reading with some minor variations. The
faulty circuit will be significantly different in most cases. Same
rules apply for mosfets, jfets ect.
After a little practice and you have found a problem, you will quickly
realize that this is one of the easier repairs. You will be looking
forward to the next hassle.
Keep in mind, not a cure all, but a quick test.
Good luck,
.
