Yeah I have to agree to this. This conversation could run a long long
time. But the bottom line is the public awareness of the thing itself
is slim to none- at least fading for sure. Craig's checkstand story is
a perfect example. I can even think within the last year a couple of
our fellow RGPer's posted links to themselves on the local news. Both
times in different cities, the newsman at the desk intro'd the piece
saying "Pinball! Remember that?" It is not seen by the public at large
as a still-being-made product.
My roommate obviously has found himself living in a rather pin-
conscious house with me around. Not that long ago, he was trying to
find some common ground for conversation and says out of the blue "I'd
love to play a Sopranos pinball machine." I said "Oh yeah. I love that
one. It's one of my favorites." He looks at me dumbfounded. He
honestly thought he just made that up! He had no clue that such a
machine even existed! (Though I can think of at least 4 on location in
our area) I described the whole game to his amazement- I still think
he thinks I'm pulling his leg- he won't come with to try one out in
person.
I get that question all the time though- "They still make those?!"
It's just seen as something old/retro. I wonder if when non-hobby
people see games with obviously new licenses- the Pirates and Spidey
movies, Family Guy- if it even dawns on them 'oh wait- this has to be
a brand new machine.' I bet not actually cause, you know, it's still
'old pinball'.
The games are still great- Stern's doing an awesome job in the game
making department. They're just doing a terrible job in the promotion/
brand recognition department. They promote within the industry
obviously- trade shows and whatnot, but don't know how to break the
public. Why not advertise on Adult Swim? Why not take Spidey to
Comicon? I don't expect to see movie stars smooching over a mball
sequence- that's a little far fetched I think personally, but some
simple- or even creative- advertising might go a long way.
It's unfortunate to think Stern and Co. are busting their asses
proudly keeping the game alive while the public at large still thinks
pinball went extinct ages ago.
