Didn't realize you were trying to run a business and soley rely on
repairing & selling pins to support your families.
I am thinking of doing it while collecting a pension so the money
would be supplemental income. I used to do it as a kid job with the
last of the EM's in the mid-late '70's. Made some great money as a
high school kid. Back then the only homes that had pins were basically
mansions or upper middle class suburban homes. Pretty funny that at
fist, my parents drove me to these places and waited in the car. Once
I got my license, I drove my beat up yellow VW bug and looked somewhat
out of place going to those fancy homes. Now I do it to help others
and usually don't charge anything. If I use parts that cost me, I'll
pass that along. Most EM parts I have I got for free from Bally many
many years ago when the plant was on Belmont in Chicago and the parts
department was on Rockwell Ave & Belmont.
I have been teaching my son get repair techniques for him to make some
extra cash in the future.
Good luck to all of you with your businesses.
I currently have 4 types of work ... doing the pinball work is my
favorite (certainly compared to office cleaning, right?).
I service PCs for persons and design applications for small businesses
- increasing office efficiency, I call it.
These are necessary to support the family ... I hope one day it may be
solely, but it is unrealistic to do so for a luxury based activity.
A few places around me stopped doing home repair because of many
issues ... I am picking up the slack and I hope they might recommend
me as a professional service person. (All those ebay deals need work
and that work is not for friends and not games I sold them.)
I have built a consistent rep that should help people decide whether
they my trust me to come into their personal homes and handle work
that could be easily completed, but not long term reliable. That is
the difference I want to offer. What is that truly worth in this
society/economy?
The pinball work is the only one that I fully registered a name, got a
resale certificate and a truck and shirts for.
I am now considering this for the in-home PC work ... WannaPC
anyone? :)
KEEP IT FUN is my goal after dealing with the corporate world for
25yrs.
My kids are grown and my wife is supporting my efforts too. Bless
her.
So this seemed to be a good idea to try out more fully.
Thanks Dr Scott for that rates page ... Again, I really was happy to
see that.

PS - repair calls on highly technical, commercial machines is not to
be undervalued. We possess valuable skills/experience, not commonly
found.
