Re: OT: Thanks to all that helped on my HVAC Questions. It's Alive!

Another AC query:

How often should the (roof mounted) unit be "serviced" as preventive or efficiency measures? I looked inside and there is little to no dust on the evap and cond coils. It seems to run allot but what do I know about it??? It's been about 10 years since it was new but never had "service".

Anyone in Phoenix do side work?

Just wanted to say thanks for all the advice and concerns about my safety in
regards to getting my A/C up and running again! Yay!

It turns out that the Breaker outside the house was bad and while the
Contactor might have been ok, I went ahead and changed it...a Bug of some
sorts did get in between the contacts and cooked..I'm assuming that might
even might have caused the breaker to go bad maybe? The posts on one side
of the breaker switch were pretty scorched up.

I even gave it a good blowing out and looks much cleaner now....hopefully
it'll last another 15 years! Knock on wood...

Another question for the group...The temperature inside the house is 78.
The temperature at the register is showing 65 with the A/C on. Temperature
out side is around 74 right now. Does this sound about right for the
cooling temperature at the register in these conditions? I was wondering if
it was needing refrigerant or not. We've never had it charged since we've
been here for 7 years. Is the only way to really check is to put the gauges
on it?

Thanks again guys!

Mike

Mike,
You can check the suction or low pressure line on the outside
condenser unit to see if it ice cold and sweating. If Yyour a/c unit
is undercharged a little the suction line would be cold but not ice
cold and wouldn't have any sweating or condensation on the suction
line. Since you have 65 f discharge air coming out of your inside
diffusser it could be slightly undercharge perhaps. I would say
somewhere in the lower 50 degree discharge air temperature would be
better for cooling the house and the unit would not have to work as
hard.
