Re: Sw. Matrix row problem - no errors, just one row out

I believe I would take a break. Then look at it with fresh eyes. Then try a
different cpu first. If the problem goes away, at least you know it's a
board problem, if the problem persists, then you know it's wiring from the
cpu out. At least get the problem going in one direction, and then some
fresh thinking may bring it to light. Or kick the fu** out of it and have a
beer and enjoy life. LTG :)

OK, I've been tearing what little hair I have left out trying to get
this damned switch matrix row problem figured out on this TAF. When I
turn the game on, there are no error messages, but all row 7 switches
do not work. I have done everything that everyone has suggested, all
of them inconclusive. How can I isolate a problem that doesn't
register as a problem? When I ground pin 5 or 7 or whichever it is, it
shows the row is shorted. I have replaced every component in the chain
from the driver board through the CPU down the playfield to the opto
board and out to every switch in the row - there are the proper
voltages, there are no shorted switches or wires, the optos on the
motor board work as does the thing flips opto, which is in the row,
every connector has been inspected or replaced, inspected at least 5
times before and since replacement, every wire daisy-chained to each
switch has been thoroughly inspected with no kinks or breaks, every
LM339 in the circuit has been replaced at least once, every solder
joint on every socket has been inspected, and the list goes on. I have
even done every possible column repair - new ULN2803, 74LS374,
74LS240, on the CPU, new BR1, C8, 4N25's, 7812 Voltage reg, jumper
wires, every suggested thing on the power driver board, basically have
left no stone unturned. I'm at the point where I am about ready to
toss a molotov in this %$#*&^! thing and laugh in glee as it goes up
in smoke....but it isn't mine, otherwise I just might. But I don't
think my friend would understand, I mean, we've been friends for 20+
years but some things just don't fly, like the destruction of
something he has about $4K invested in, just because of my
frustration. Any suggestions? If I look at Clays site one more minute
and read his somewhat comprehensive but apparently flawed repair
suggestions the computer is going in the cab right before the molotov.
